Tollymore Forest Park

For the student of garden follies, Tollymore is a rare treat. A barn dressed up to look like a church, stone cones atop gate piers and gothic-style gate arches all show the influence of that highly individualistic designer, Thomas Wright of Durham (1711-1786), who was a friend of Lord Clanbrassil, owner of Tollymore at that time.

The Silent Valley

The name Silent Valley was created by the Belfast Water Commissioners and it had been formerly known as Happy Valley. The first step in the construction of the reservoir was the purchase of 9,000 acres of mountain from Lord Kilmorey in 1893, around which a boundary, now known as the Mourne Wall, was erected between 1904 and 1922. The dam was constructed across the Kilkeel River and was completed in 1933.
